Siem Reap, Cambodia Odyssey 2023

In February 2023, Tumbuh Global gathered pastors and denominational leaders for a 7-day theological reflection study abroad in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Using the Angkor Wat Temple Complex, the largest religious structure on the planet, as an intentional contextual learning backdrop and texts from pivotal Asian thinkers on human geography and structural experience, Tumbuh Travelers explored the sacredness of place and space as it relates to the responsible use of our church buildings in this new normal.

 

Many congregations are grappling with shrinking numbers in the pews, the persistent desire for an online option, and the expense of maintaining empty buildings most days of the week. This guided global odyssey served as an intentional time of reflection and discernment alongside fellow clerical leaders on what is the next best step regarding use of buildings and land. This odyssey included a guided two-day visit to Angkor Wat Temple (where Tomb Raider was filmed), an evening at the world famous Phare Circus, and a visit to the Cambodian Landmine Museum and Relief Facility.
