Navigating the Skills Gap Crisis

A recent article in Fortune, confirmed what many of us already know: the employment landscape is rapidly changing. Whether you are a church pastor, a university professor, or a car mechanic, the years since the onset of the COVID pandemic have been a whirlwind of shifting needs, unclear expectations, and workplace pressures. While many organizations are investing in new technology to streamline their operations, improve efficiency, and save money, the skills of those employed by these organizations have not kept pace. The rapid rate of technological advancement has created a significant skills gap among working professionals. In turn, there is a growing need for people who possess the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate this changing times.

In the article mentioned above, two crucial skills emerged as increasingly important skills every professional needs: technological acuity and lifelong learning. Technological acuity refers to the ability to understand and use technology effectively. As new technologies become more prevalent, those who lack technological skills will be at a disadvantage. From basic computer literacy to online course hosting, there are a variety of technical skills that can help you remain relevant to your organization's mission. Lifelong learning refers to embodying a learner's mindset even after formal schooling has ended. Lifelong learners are curious, self-motivated, inquisitive, and driven. They are eager and ready to learn new ways of doing life and work.

However, it's not just about technical skills. Soft skills, such as critical thinking and adaptability, are equally important. The ability to communicate effectively is essential in today's workplace, where remote work and virtual meetings are becoming the norm. Critical thinking is necessary for problem-solving, decision-making, and innovation. Adaptability is critical for navigating change and uncertainty.
